Diablo, with lakes, parks and walking paths around the golf course. Summerset, Garin Ranch, Apple Hill Estates and Deer Ridge Country Club all have their own streets and sidewalks. Add sunny Mediterranean weather with long dry summers, and many small dogs here get daily outings, plus plenty of grass, dust and warm pavement under their paws.

Those daily walks are great for your dog and tough on the coat. Fur picks up dust, dry grass and burrs, and mats form where a harness or collar rubs. When the van pulls up, I handle one dog at a time with warm water, a gentle bath, a full brush-out and a trim that suits your breed. I also check and clean the paw pads and trim the hair between them. It fits neatly into a busy Brentwood family schedule.

For most small dogs on daily walks, a groom every four to six weeks keeps the coat clean and mat-free. Dogs with long or curly hair may need it closer to four weeks, since daily walking packs dust and loose hair into the coat.
