What Antioch's Heat, Hills and Parks Do to a Small Dog
Antioch dogs get out and about. Markley Creek Park has a gravel-floored dog park with a separate area for dogs under 30 pounds, and Contra Loma Regional Park has its own dog park plus trails and a swimming lagoon. The Delta de Anza Trail links Antioch to Oakley and Pittsburg for long leash walks, and Black Diamond Mines lets leashed dogs onto its hill trails. Summers are long, hot and dry, with days that often reach the high 90s and sometimes pass 100. South Antioch near Sand Creek and Deer Valley is newer, while the north side along the river is the oldest part of town.
All that heat and walking leaves a mark. Thick coats hold warmth, summer dust sticks to the fur, and dry hill grass can leave seeds in the paws.
