The park district says ticks are most active from December through June, waiting on vegetation along trails, and foxtails are a bigger worry in dry months.

Ticks and seeds are easier to find on a clean, well-brushed coat. During a van visit I bathe your small dog in warm water, go over the skin by hand, and look through the paws, ears and armpits. I trim the hair between the toes and keep the leg feathering short so less can cling. If I find a tick or a seed, I will point it out to you and show you where it was hiding.
